Inside Le Brain

- Some scientists divide the brain into three parts.
   I. Hind Brain.
          1. Medulla Oblangata
                * Heartrate, breathing, and blood pressure.
          2. Pons
                * Connects the hind brain, mid brain, and fore brain together
                * Involved in facial expressions.
          3. Cerebellum
                * Located in the back of our head- means little brain.
                * Coordinated muscle movement; like tracking a target.
   II. Mid Brain
           1. Coordinates simple movements with sensory information
           2. Contains the Reticular Formation: arousal and ability to focus attention.

   III. Fore Brain
           1. Thalamus
                 * Receives sensory information and sends them to appropriate areas of fore brain.
                 * Like a switch board.
                 * Everything but smell

Limbic System: Emotional center of the brain
   Made up of the Hypothalamus, Amygdala, and Hipocampus
            1. Hypothalamus
                  * Pea sized in brain, but plays a not so pea sized rule.
                  * Body temperature, hunger, thirst, sexual arousal.
            2. Hippocampus
                   * Memory processing
            3. Amygdala
                    * Vital for basic emotion.
Cerebral Cortex

  • Top layer of the brain.
  • Contains wrinkles called fissures.
  • The fissures increase surface area of our brain
  • Laid out, it would be the side of a large pizza.
Hemispheres
  • Divided into a left and right hemisphere
  • Contralateral controlled- Left controls right side of the body and vice versa.
  • Brain Lateralization
  • Lefties are better at spatial and creative logic
  • Righties are better at logic.
Split brain Patients
- Corpus Callosum attaches the 2 hemispheres of the cerebral cortex.
- When removed you have a split-brain patient.
