Is it Ethical to Experiment on living things?

"This is probably one of the most controversial subjects. I feel it is necessary to test on animals for research purpose solely, especially since some animals are breed for that purpose. Although i am against animal abuse, i agree that testing on animals benefits us in the long run, as long as the process is done right. I feel as though people like to pick at the negatives but forget where research like that has gotten us. I bet if those critics had to pick between saving these animals and curing cancer, they would pick curing cancer in a heartbeat." - Chisom

Now lets see what the book has to say on this Issue:
 Why do psychologist study animals?

  • Human psychology resembles that of many other animals.
  • Animals experiment has led to treatment for many human diseases- insulin for diabetes, vaccines for polio, rabies, and transplants to replace defective organs.

Is it Ethical to Experiment on Animals?
"While researchers each year conduct experiments on some 200,000 dogs and cats cared for under humane regulations, humane animal shelters are forced to kill 50 times that many."

  • Mobilization for Animals, a network for animal protect argues that animals are shocked, deprived of food and water in these experiments, and are tortured.
  • Psychologist Caroline Coile and Neal Miller in 1984 analyzed research articales found in the American Psychological Association's Journal during the preceding five years and disproved the allegations.
  • Some animal protection organizations encourages naturalistic observation instead.
  • But researchers argue that it is the compassion for animals versus the compassion for people, not morality.
  • Researchers agree that humans are biased as to what animals they feel have rights. They don't argue to all animals right but those they feel they have a kinship with
Food for Thought: Would you have stopped the experiment with rabies that caused dogs to suffer that led to a vaccine that saved millions of people and other dogs from agonizing death?

Is it Ethical to Experiment of People?
  • The experiments are limited to blinking lights, flashing words, and pleasant social interactions.
  • Occasionally, researchers so temporary stress of deceive people, when they believe it is and a violent or negative behavior.

American Psychological Association (1992) Ethical Principles:

  1. Must obtain the informed consent of potential participants
  2. protect them from harm and discomfort
  3. Treat information about individual participants confidential
  4. fully explain the research afterward.
Maybe perhaps people need to get off their high horses. What do you think?

There is a very thin line between ethical and unethical when it comes to animal and human testing. Naturally, it is important to tread lightly on the subject, but I totally agree with you. Although I'm not going to use the word ethical, I do know that it plays a significant role in our daily lives. There are many regulations and guidelines that keep testing humane, and the potential for scientific and medical breakthrough is, in my opinion, the greater option.
