Stranger Anxiety: Where an infant encounters a stranger and they exhibit anxiety.
Separation Anxiety: Whenever a child is separated from their parent.

Attachment: Harry Harlow and his monkey

Critical Periods: The optimal period shortly after birth when an organisms exposure to certain stimuli or experiences produce proper development.

Types of Attachment 
1. Secure
2. Avoidant
3. Anxious /ambivalent



Parenting Styles
1. Authoritarian Parents: Parent are bosses.
2. Permissive Parents: Kids are in charge (Laissez Faire)
3. Authoritative Parents: Parents and Kids compromise

  1. Trust V. Mistrust (0-2 yrs)
     - Babies want to know if they can trust their care givers.
  2. Autonomy V. Shame and Doubt (1-3 yrs)
     - Toddlers begin to control their bodies (toilet training)
     - Temper tantrum
     - Big word "NO"
     -Can they learn control or will they doubt themselves.
3. Initiative V. Guilt (3-6 yrs.)
     - Am I good or Bad
     - Words go from "No" to "WHY?"
     - Is there curiosity engaged or scolded.  
4. Industry V. Inferiority (6-12 yrs old)
     - School begins
     - Do we feel good or bad about our accomplishments
     - Can lead to us feeling bad about ourselves for the rest of our lives...inferiority complex.
5. Identity V. Role Confusion
     - In our teenage years we try out different roles.
     - Who i am?  What group do i fit into?
6.  Intimacy V. Isolation (Early Adult)
     - Have to balance work with relationship
     - What are my priorities
7. Generativity V. Stagnation
     - Is everything going as planned
     - Mid life crisis
8. Integrity V. Despair
     - Look back on life
     - Was my life meaningful or do i regret it?
