Understanding Psychology


Psychology is the study of behavior and mental process.
Behavior is anything we do that can be observed while the Mental Process is internal experiences such as thoughts and sensations.

Systematic Study is the systematic collection and examination of data to support or disprove an hypothesis rather than depending on the common sense.

Key Players in Psychology:
Hippocrates: Greek physiologist that though the mind or the soul resided in the brain.

  • Mind-body Dualism: Seeing the mind and body as two different things that interact.

Plato: Greek Philosopher that believed that who we are and what we know are innate (inborn).
Aristotle: Plato's student, believed who we are and what we know are acquired from experiences.

  • Monoism: Seeing the mind and body as different aspects of the same thing.

John Locke: Believed that knowledge comes from observation and what we know comes from experiences.

  • Coined the term "tabula rasa" - (blank slate)

Rene Descartes: Believed that what we know is innate.

Nature: certain ideas are innate to the mind v. Nurture: anything we know, is gained from experience.

The Birth of Psychology
  • Wilhelm Wundt- 1879 University of Leipzig

  1. Psychology's first experiement, birth of science.
  2. Established the first psychology lab.
  3. Introspection (looking inward).
  • Edward Titchener
  • Structuralism
  1. Windt, Titchener and Hall
  2. Used introspection to explore the structural elements of the mind.
  • Functionalism
  1. Reaction to structuralism
  2. sought to explain how our mental and behavioral process function.
  3. Focused on purpose of behavior
  4. William James influenced by Darwin
